Aber nicht nur auf die Struktur des Werkes zielen die Kritiker; Zitate wie „ ...the lack of retraint, the flat secondary characters...“3, „...a number of implausible circumstances that in the hands of a lesser author would be fatal to the credibility of the narrative“4 sind nur einige von vielen typischen, die sich in der Sekundärliteratur finden. So sagt Ericksen, we are moved in this novel by a substructure of imagery that intensifies our involvment with the main characters“5, und Walter Allen bemerkt „if it were not for the unity of tone, Jane Eyre would be incoherent, for as a construction it is artless.“6 Die Kritiker beziehen sich hier hauptsächlich auf die Symbolik der vier Elemente, die den gesamten Roman durchzieht und strukturiert. So bemerkt Solomon, daß zwar viele der Bilder in Jane Eyre plump seien, so der „chestnut tree“ oder „grim landscape“, doch merkt er an: „.. two images are so pervasive that they serve as a substructure for the entire novel: fire and water“7. David Lodge weist darauf hin, daß der Gebrauch der vier Elemente in Jane Eyre korrespondiere mit der hierarchischen Ordnung der vier Elemente im elisabethantischen Zeitalter, die die Erde zuunterst setzt, gefolgt vom Wasser, dann Luft und schließlich Feuer, „the noblest element of all“8. Doch bemerkt Lodge weiterhin, daß Charlotte Bronte nicht elisabethanisch war und auch kein „highly self-conscious and deliberate symbolist novelist like Joyce or Conrad“9. Charlotte Bronte, so Lodge, suche in der Natur keine Ordnung, sondere Widerspiegelung von Janes turbulentem inneren Leben. „The elements have a constantly changing, and often ambivalent aspect in the novel, sustained by iits basic rhythms, the alternation of night and day, storm and calm.“ [...]

Bronte’s novel about a shy, quiet governess who becomes a tutor in a great house and falls in love with its lonely and mysterious master is one of the great classics of English literature. Unique in its attention to the thoughts and feelings of a female protagonist, Jane Eyre was ahead of its time as a proto-feminist text. When it was published in 1847, however, Bronte was attacked by critics for what they felt was anti-Christian sentiment in her unflinching critique of the oppressions of Victorian society.
